About Us
The following are members of the current Board
of Directors.
Gertrude M. Webb, Ed.D.
Dr. Gertrude M. Webb has been a
pioneer in the field of learning disabilities and dyslexia since
long before America's schools began diagnosing children with
specific language and learning disabilities. After graduating
from Boston Teachers’ College, and as a young English teacher in
one of Boston's junior high schools she met her first dyslexic
child in 1937. Bill, a thirteen year old boy, who clearly
understood and enjoyed Shakespeare but who could barely read or
spell, introduced Dr. Webb to dyslexia. Since that time, Dr.
Webb has sought ways to bring such students to success. Dr.
Webb continued her studies in the field of education receiving
her Masters degree from Boston University and her doctorate from
Boston College.
Dr. Webb founded and for
twenty-five years directed The Program for Advancement of
Learning (PAL) at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. PAL
was the first program in the United States specifically designed
for college able learning disabled students. It has sent
thousands of college graduates on to contribute as professionals
in their respective worlds.
When, in 1990, Dr. Webb
retired from active teaching at Curry, they granted her a
Doctorate of Humane Letters and she became a Professor Emeritus
at Curry. Around that same time, Bill Baldwin, a former student
of Dr. Webb’s and himself a graduate of PAL, founded the Webb
International Center for Dyslexia , Inc. (WICD) as he believed
that unlike himself, students shouldn’t have to wait until they
got to college to find out how they learned best. Dr. Webb has
served as WICD’s Executive Director since that time.
